Hi!!

I made it to Houston, TX!  This week, I’ve been customizing math sessions that I will be facilitating for new teachers next week!  My days have been long, but I’ve really enjoyed thinking about the best ways to help new math teachers figure out how to lead their students to success.

I certainly miss all of you!  I have been bragging about how wonderful my new students have been at Rogers-Herr.  I tell everyone how bright and well behaved you are.  I can’t wait to return to Rogers-Herr so that I can tell you all about my experiences and hit the ground running in our math class!

I know that all of you are working hard back in North Carolina!  I truly wish I could be there with you all instead…if for no other reason than it is over 100 degrees here!!!!

I hope you’re doing well!

Sincerely,

Ms. Rowland

Welcome to SUCCESS!

Welcome to the world of 7th grade mathematics!  Unifying concepts and skills from many school years prior, this course develops students’ knowledge of basic math skills, geometric concepts of proportion, relation, and shape, measurement, patterns and functions, we will interpret statistics and real life mathematical information,  and students will their understanding of solving problems.   In my classroom, I have the privilege of providing students with the opportunity to BE MATHEMATICIANS.  By the time my students leave my classroom, I hope to have led them to become independent learners who use their problem solving skills to ask and answer questions about mathematical situations.  we will build on concepts from elementary school to discuss   .

The 7 Math 7 mathematics class is a survey course including the concepts of number operations, measurement, geometry, data analysis & statistics, and algebraic thinking.  It is intended to build on students’ prior knowledge in order to deepen their understanding and prepare them for further study in eighth grade.  The major concepts and skills that students will learn are:

            ·    Interpretting boxplots & histograms

         ·    Using measures of central tendency to analyze data

         ·    Defining outliers and their effect on statistical measures

         ·    Operating with rational numbers

         ·    Simplifying & evaluating algebraic expressions

         ·    Solving Equations & inequalities

         ·    Applying formulas to solve problems

         ·    Solving percent of change problems

         ·    Reasoning with ratios & proportions

         ·    Defining similarity and congruence

         ·    Solving scale model problems

         ·    Finding volume and surface area of polyhedra

The 7 Math 8 course includes the concepts in both the seventh and eighth grade standard courses of study.  It is intended to prepare students for Algebra I in middle school.  However, enrollment in this course does not guarantee placement in Algebra I in eighth grade.  In addition to the concepts in 7 Math 7, 7 Math 8 students will also learn to:

        ·      Analyze bivariate data using scatterplots

        ·      Identify misuses of data

        ·      Define and calculate slope

        ·      Write, solve,  and graph linear functions

        ·      Define, compare, and order irrational numbers

        ·      Determine the affect of changing dimensions on measurements

        ·      Solve problems using the Pythagorean theorem
